Horseless Polo teams
The Teams
Eight franchises. Two divisions. One Diamond Trough.
The Rulebook
The Fieldman's Guide
Official rules of Horseless Polo, as ratified by the League.

The Horseless Polo League was established in 1896 by a small group of enthusiasts who believed the sport could be played without the unnecessary expense of horses. What began as informal matches on borrowed grounds quickly attracted attention for its physicality and unpredictable character. The League was formally incorporated in 1902 and has operated inconsistently since, growing from its working-class roots in Western New York into a fully professional organization with franchises across the country. Today, the HPL proudly counts among its partners several distinguished corporate sponsors and counts its players among the highest-compensated athletes in emerging sports. The game has come a long way.

OBJECTIVES OF THE GAME
1.01 Tally more scores than your opponent in the allotted time, which shall constitute a single victory.
1.02 Record more victories in your regional division than the opposing teams in hopes of being voted in to the Playaround.
1.03 Progress through the Playaround without a loss to enter the Championship Gala.
1.04 Win the Championship Gala to receive the Diamond Trough for one complete season.
1.05 The Lady Chesterbock Memorial Trophy, which recognizes outstanding achievement by a single player over the course of a single season, is awarded to the player who is named the most valuable player the most times in a single season. In the event of a tie, the closest living blood relative to Lady Chesterbock will be responsible for selecting the trophy's recipient.
1.06 Hall of Distinguished Gentlemen election process is... well, secret. Sorry.
1.07 The Diamond Trough shall not be described.
STAFFING THE FIELD
2.01 Each team must consist of no less than SIX (6) players per side.
2.02 The maximum number of players eligible for a game time roster shall constitute no more than the lesser of ONE EIGHTEENTH (1/18th) the total number of registered players in the league or ONE EIGHTH (1/8th) the number of paid attendees to the event.
2.03 A player's rank shall be referred to as a Greenbrook, a Slidesman, or a Longlord, depending on the number of consecutive seasons they have participated in the league.
2.04 A Greenbrook is under no circumstances allowed any affectation or nickname.
2.05 Each franchise is allowed no more than TWO (2) booners.
2.06 Booners may not sign players directly. Players must be offered contracts from the franchise's dedicated Loggerman.
2.07 A unified booner / loggerman shall only be permitted under a TWO THIRDS (2/3rds) vote by previously registered loggermen prior to the mid-season contract deadline.
2.08 The standard fielding positions include TWO (2) Quartermen, TWO (2) Round Mills, ONE (1) Seamer, and ONE (1) Duckett per side. A team may change the number of active player positions live on the field provided there is a minimum of ONE (1) Seamer in the game at all times.
2.09 Players caught using performance enhancing drugs will be suspended from the league for FIVE (5) seasons for their first violation. Also known as the "Dee Clause."
2.11 No player or official shall accept compensation, monetary or otherwise, in exchange for an abnormal performance which could affect the outcome of the match.
GAME PRELIMINARIES
3.01 Matching team uniforms must be worn with a player number clearly marked on the back. The Fieldman may use discretion as to whether any player is in violation.
3.02 A player's uniform must contain a unique one- or two-digit number not already in use or retired with their given franchise. Vowels may be substituted for numbers should numbers become unavailable. Aquatic mammal silhouettes may be substituted for vowels should vowels become unavailable.
3.03 A player is allowed a maximum of THREE (3) pre-game authorized superstitions prior to becoming a Longlord. A Longlord is allowed FOUR (4).
3.04 Prior to the start of the game, it is a Fieldman's duty to measure the width of the field to assure it is within league accepted standards, inform the opposing ducketts which side of the playing field they shall defend, ring the talleyboard TWO (2) times prior to the start of the first half-halve, and log the starting line-ups for each team with the Clocksmith.
3.05 No player may use any hand gesture or spoken terminology which will be recognized by the Clocksmith as a request to stop the official game clock. The game clock can only be stopped at the end of a half-halve.
3.06 Should a spectator interfere with the field action, the head Fieldman is responsible for negotiating a penalty placement.
3.07 If a defensive player blocks a shot, it shall be required that the player's name is publicly addressed and recognized for this action.
3.08 Players must be wearing TWO (2) shoes prior to taking the field of play. Should a player only have ONE (1) leg, the second shoe must be worn regardless.
STARTING & ENDING THE GAME
4.01 Game Status, Sun position
4.02 All disputed judgements in regards to time keeping shall be deferred to the resident Clocksmith. See 5.03.
4.03 The fieldman may use his discretion to postpone a match due to unsafe weather conditions or natural disasters, with the exception of fire. In the case that fire threatens the lives of the players and spectators at an event, it shall be the Clocksmith's judgment as to whether or not to postpone the contest.
4.04 Official starting positions must be taken in accordance with league specifications prior to the start of a match.
4.05 After a score, the game must be restarted with a face off regulated by a Fieldman.
4.06 Should a match prove to be abnormally uneventful, to the point where the enthusiasm and integrity of one of the teams is called in to question, the league retains the responsibility to sanction the violating team.
4.07 The home team shall defend the left side of the field relative to the visiting team's locker room. Teams do not switch sides during game play.
CLOCKSMITHING
5.01 ONE (1) game shall consist of no less than FOUR (4) consecutive half-halves occurring on the same calendar day.
5.02 Game lengths
5.03 The resident Clocksmith is authorized to make all judgment calls in regards to disputed time keeping and game postponement due to fire.
5.04 All time shall be kept using sequential numbers, relative to the previous number. Should a number appear to have been skipped, the Clocksmith must recount it.
UNGENTLEMENLY INFRACTIONS
6.01 TWO (2) turns past mid-court constitute a Halfening. The ball must be re-played.
6.02 The ball can never touch the painted line after a player has crossed the half back. A violation may result in a delinquent break away.
6.03 Through contact, should a player be unable to stand under their own power, an injury shall be called. The injurer whilst be rewarded intermediate possession.
6.04 The grabbing of a player by their uniform or part of their body, and the subsequent tugging of that held object at more than a THIRTY (30) degree radius shall be considered a Quarter Turn.
6.05 Sliding the ball beyond the SECOND (2nd) line from within the perimeter comprises a Half-liner.
6.06 Intentional redirection using the teeth, natural or man-made, to assist a score, shall be considered a White Cap and the score will not count.
6.07 Taking two consecutive steps with the same foot shall constitute a hopperfurd, resulting in loss of possession.
6.08 Gouging a teammate with the handle-end of the mallet TWO (2) times in THIRTY (30) seconds results in a Quarter-liner.
LEGACY RULINGS
7.01 After an unsuccessful yarding attempt, the opposing team may acquire one of the violating team's members for no more than a SINGLE (1) half-halve.
7.02 A duckett may not ride the shoulders of a quarterman in order to establish a defensive position.
7.03 Should a goose wander on to the field of play, the clocksmith is responsible for the coin flip which will determine who shall remove the goose.
7.04 Should a duck wander on to the field of play, the home team's starting duckett is responsible for the coin flip which will determine who shall remove the duck.
7.05 No team can be named after a fruit or vegetable. Also known as the "Chiquita Clause."
CLASSIFIED
8.01 Contents of the CLASSIFIED Section of the Fieldman's Guide shall not be viewable by the public without the uncontested written consent of the league's commissioner.
THE OFFICIAL SCORER
9.01 When the ball crosses a team's goal line, a goal will be registered for the opposing team.
9.02 Should a defensive player be the last to touch the ball before the ball crosses the goal line, the goal will still be awarded to the opposing team, and the goal will be credited to the last offensive player who touched the ball prior to the goal.
9.03 For a goal to be officially counted, there must be time remaining on the clock when the ball crosses the goal line.
9.04 TCI (Trough Contribution Index) is a position-weighted measurement to determine a player's value: a Duckett goal counts 4x because it almost never happens, a Quarterman goal counts 1.8x, a Seamer goal is baseline 1.0. Assists add 0.6, blocks add 0.8 (1.2 for Ducketts), UIs subtract 0.4. All divided by games played.
